A little backstory…
Previously, the Pioneer Fringe posted a brief argument as to why the North American Bison (a.k.a. American Buffalo) is a species worth protecting. The following day, the US House of Representatives passed the National Bison Legacy Act, a bill that would grant the N.A. Bison symbolic status as the National Mammal of the USA. Truly, we blog in exciting times.
So, what’s new?
Yesterday (5/9/2016), President Obama signed the National Bison Legacy Act into law. Huzzah!
So, what now?
The Act simply recognizes the N.A. Bison as a key figure of American heritage and environmental importance. No new wildlife refuges or sprawling grasslands have been set aside for the species. No new protection has been granted the N.A. Bison at all. (So, still thy carnivorous heart. Buffalo burgers remain on the menu.)
The National Bison Legacy Act simply grants recognition. The effort to restore and maintain healthy prairies is far from won but the Act adds weight and momentum to the conservation movement. Awareness saves species and ecosystems. Join the discourse and spread the word.
